Understanding what Judaica is important, before knowing their significance. Judaica is anything that pertains to the Jewish religion- objects, art, literature, music and even recipes that are particular to the rituals in Judaism. Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world with its center in Jerusalem but through the global spread of its followers, it has its branches in all parts of the world.
These sophisticated art pieces which have been handcrafted in modern and traditional designs. Most of the sculptural Hanukiahs depict different figurines while the common thread is that all have Eight Candles to celebrate the eight nights of Hanukkah.
More than that Judaica also includes wine decanters, Etrong boxes, Hanukahs, honey dishes, jewelry, Besamim sculptures, Yad torah pointers, liquor cups, menorahs, candlesticks, Mezuzzot and other objects that are used in the religious activities. Antique Judaica are much in demand due to their beauty and sacredness. Although the authentic antiques may be out of reach of common man, there are many replicas available.
Sterling silver is used to craft innumerable objects in Judaica. It is an alloy that has 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper and measured as 925 for purity. Silver by itself is too soft to make large objects and thus is alloyed with other metals to provide it stability and ductility. To reduce casting problems and increasing resistance to tarnish while in the process of manufacturing, silver is sometimes mixed with other metals like zinc, platinum and boron.
The preferred metal is silver though there are objects crafted in gold and other precious metals with precious and semi precious stones studded. Sotheby has a separate auction for Judaica objects, due to the intense popularity as objects of religious interest and collectibles.
Most of the objects are handcrafted in Filigree and hammering out designs in metal. The traditional designs include bunches of grapes, city of Jerusalem, Hebrew sacred words, symbols and flora. There are many people whose love for Judaica makes them collectors of this rare art.
Most of the antique pieces of Judaica date back to the 16th to 19 th. century, and have survived the ravages of time, making them even more precious than ever before. The sanctity and reverence of these objects has increased over time while modern replicas have flooded the market. With highly skilled sculptors, these affordable silver objects can be bought easily, either the internet or around your homes.
