How Vulnerable Are You?
August 18, 2008
How vulnerable do you allow yourself to be? While on this journey called life, do you tend to play it safe, or do you take risks?
I had a conversation recently with a young man who I am very close with. He was expressing concern over getting involved in a relationship with a young woman who he likes a lot. He has seen others get hurt in relationships, and announced that he would never allow that to happen to himself. My first reaction was to begin a lecture on why he should not feel that way and to try to talk him into giving the relationship a shot. I decided to respond, instead, by giving him something to ponder that might cause him to have a different perspective.
I asked him what price he thought he would pay if he did not allow himself to be vulnerable. You see, we can walk or run through our lives in the security of safe choices, or we can choose to experience wonderful things beyond our wildest dreams if we dare to take some risks. When we remain in control of every situation by staying in our comfort zones, we relinquish the ability to enjoy some of the best things that life has to offer. While taking risks can lead us to an undesirable end, there is always the opportunity to learn from the experience and do things differently the next time. On the other hand, taking risks can ultimately lead us to the promised land.
If you had the chance to attain your dreams and goals how vulnerable would become? Would the prize be worth the risk?
